Biography

Coach Smith, self-proclaimed "King of Kid’s Fitness," is a certified K-12 physical education teacher and Children’s Fitness Specialist (A.F.P.A.). With over 15 years experience working with children across Dade and Broward counties in various capacities, Coach Smith saw an increase in children who needed additional help with their fitness levels. With an unwavering desire to make a permanent positive change in his student's lives, Coach Smith started his first non-profit organization, "Get Fit With Coach Smith Inc."

Coach Smith

Get Fit with Coach Smith is the first and only free after school fitness program within the Broward County School District. One of the underlying goals of this program is to help eliminate childhood obesity through aerobics, light weight-training and nutrition education. Watching the epidemic of obesity triple over the years motivated Coach Smith to develop an intervention program that will help save lives and eradicate this epidemic, an epidemic that threatens the lives, of so many of our children. The program was so successful at Coach Smith’s school that he decided to start a second corporation, EDU-FITT Inc. EDU-FITT is a diverse, comprehensive program that combines education and fitness to help decrease childhood obesity and increase student achievement in core subject areas.

Coach Smith With The Kids

EDU-FITT has garnered critical acclaim from local and national media since its inception. After discovering the phenomenal content of the EDU-FITT program, organizations like the YMCA's Positive Athletics Sports Camp and Deerfield Beach Housing Authority have infused EDU-FITT into their existing programs. Coach Smith is on a personal crusade to bring more awareness to childhood obesity and use effective strategies to combat and eradicate this life-threatening disease so that children around the country can live a longer healthier life.

As a certified K-12 physical educator, Coach Smith witnesses daily how childhood obesity affects children emotionally, socially and physically. Overweight children frequently experience endless taunting, peer rejection and harsh treatment from other children at school and in their communities. This constant, unprovoked mistreatment leads to depression, suicidal thoughts/attempts, isolation and lowered self-esteem. Studies show that children who are overweight participate less in classroom activities and discussions. Consequently, these children fall behind in their studies and their academics begin to suffer. Making matters worse for our children is that fact that school districts around the country are cutting physical education programs. Children have already begun to pay the price because of the elimination of quality physical education programs.
